Craps has the widest spread of house edges of any game in a casino. On a single table, at the same moment, you can place a bet with no mathematical edge at all and a bet costing sixteen per cent — and the two are separated by about twelve inches of felt.
This is unusual. In roulette every bet costs the same. In baccarat there are effectively two sensible options. In craps the layout presents thirty-odd betting positions with edges spanning a range of more than fortyfold, and no visual cue distinguishing the good from the ruinous. The layout is the same size for all of them.
Why the spread is so wide
The reason is historical rather than designed. Craps evolved by accretion — the core bets came first, and the proposition bets in the centre of the table were added over time as attractions, priced generously to the house because they pay in large multiples and look exciting.
The result is a game where knowing five facts places you among the most efficient players at the table, and knowing none places you among the least. Two entries deserve highlighting. The Big 6 and Big 8 pay even money on exactly the same outcome that the place 6 and place 8 pay 7:6 on — a 9.09% edge against 1.52% for an identical bet. It exists purely to catch players who have not compared them.
And “any seven”, at 16.67%, is the most expensive bet in mainstream casino gambling, worse than the keno-style options and worse than every slot in the lobby.
The odds bet: genuinely zero
This is the only bet in a casino paid at true mathematical odds, with no margin taken at all.
After a point is established on a pass line bet, you may place an additional wager “behind” it. If the point is 4 or 10, it pays 2:1; on 5 or 9, 3:2; on 6 or 8, 6:5. Those are exactly the true probabilities, which means the house edge on that portion of your money is precisely zero.
The practical effect is on the blended cost of your position. A pass line bet alone carries 1.41%. Backed with 3-4-5x odds — the standard maximum at most tables — the combined edge across the total amount at risk falls to roughly 0.37%, which is lower than any other bet available anywhere in a casino, including full-pay video poker in most variants.
Two things follow. First, the odds bet is not advertised, is not marked on the layout, and must be requested — it is the least visible bet on the table and the best one. Second, it requires more money at risk, so the correct approach is to size the pass line bet down and the odds bet up, rather than adding odds on top of a stake you had already chosen.
Why the bad bets sit in the middle
The centre section — hardways, any seven, any craps, the horn — carries edges between 9% and 17% and occupies the most visually prominent part of the table.
Position is not accidental. These are the bets with large payout multiples and short resolution times, which makes them the most engaging to place and the most expensive to hold. A hard 8 paying 9:1 feels like an opportunity; at 9.09%, it costs six times what the place 8 does on a closely related outcome.
The proposition bets also resolve on almost every roll, which multiplies their cost per hour. A 1.41% pass line bet resolves every few rolls; a 16.67% any-seven bet resolves on every single one.
Online and live differ mainly in pace
RNG craps runs as fast as you press, which can exceed 200 rolls an hour. Live dealer craps runs 60–100. Physical tables with a full crowd run 40–60.
At a 0.37% blended edge, pace matters little. At a 9% proposition edge, tripling the pace triples the cost. The players most exposed to fast online craps are precisely those making the centre bets — which is worth knowing before choosing a format.
One further note on RNG craps: dice-setting, throwing technique and any physical influence theory are irrelevant online by construction, and the evidence for them offline is weak in any case.
A minimal practical approach
- Bet the pass line or don’t pass, at the table minimum or slightly above.
- Take maximum odds behind it. This is the entire strategy, and it is the whole of what separates efficient from inefficient play.
- If adding bets, use place 6 and place 8 at 1.52%, and nothing else.
- Ignore the centre of the table completely. Every bet there costs between six and forty times the odds-backed line bet.
- Never bet Big 6 or Big 8. Place the same number instead for a sixth of the cost.
- Check the field payout before betting it — 3:1 on the 12 gives 2.78%, 2:1 gives 5.56%, and the difference is printed on the layout.
That is a complete approach to craps in six lines. It is not a system and offers no advantage; it simply avoids paying between six and forty times more than necessary for the same game.
